Are You Using Your "Good Stuff" More Often?

I am!  I am old and nobody wants it and I am going to use it!

I am using some silver flatware (I wash it off in the sink after we use it--not a big deal); "good" plates; nicer makeup when I wear it; cloth napkins because I have accumulated them and they go in with the "good" dish towels when I wash them; and such.

How about you?  Are you using it up or getting rid of it?

When I go out I'm wearing my nice chinos I used to wear to work sometimes AND I'm taking them to the cleaners!  LOL!!!  I'll wear them 2 or 3 hours a few times, then swing by the cleaners!  It's a treat!  It makes me feel good.

I no longer have any "good stuff."  Got rid of it all before our last move.

i've never understood the logic in saving the good stuff. i use everything i buy immediately. i bought it in the first place because i liked it, it made me happy to be able to afford it, so why save it. use it and enjoy it while you can, is the way i see it.

I don't have any old stuff or good stuff ..... just a bunch of stuff.

Years ago - I was at my aunt's house and she turned on Oprah - and the show was about saving stuff for "good" (special occasions) - shoes, clothes, dishes, tableware, etc., etc.

And she made a good point - why save it - enjoy it now.

Re: Are You Using Your "Good Stuff" More Often?

I will not live long enough to use all the china, glasses, utensils, pots, pans, towels, sheets, etc that I have...!

Some of the soft goods are still in original wrappers, in the linen closet, while I use towels that are years old for daily use!! Ridiculous!!!

Waiting for "company". They'll be waiting a LONG time!!!!

A lot are  inherited, a lot I bought.

So....I will not ADD another thing to these items, and I WILL use them. The nice china plates with the gold rims, the coffee cups and saucers, the soup tureens, all the "good stuff" that last came out for "company" twenty or more years ago!!!

It's pretty. It's durable. Yes I hand wash, but since I live alone, it's not much. I don't fumble stuff or drop things but maybe once a decade.

Who cares if it breaks or chips? NO ONE is going to care. And the item itself will be happy that it was consumed in use, instead of on a shelf, collecting dust, in a china cabinet.

People are like that too!!!!

I say USE the good stuff. What are we saving it for? Especially if you're getting older, live alone, and realistically are NOT going to entertain crowds.

All the things I inherited from Mom, who inherited and saved stuff from HER mom....I'm using it!! TWO china cabinets full of stuff!!!

People who DO visit are surprised and pleased when they are served on nice things. And they don't fumble stuff and break it either.

Re: Are You Using Your "Good Stuff" More Often?

I use all of it!  As my husband, always, said:  Caskets do not come with drawers!  I use my silver service every single day and yes, I put it in the dishwasher!  By using it every single day, it does not have to be polished, maybe once a year at the most. I had a silverware insert made to fit my largest kitchen drawer and accommodate my silverware service (12) and serving pieces.  I have three full sets of China which I use as well and these go in the dishwasher as well.  I want to get the pleasure out of using them and all the memories of family and meals we enjoyed starting with my grandmother.  If they break, they break but the pleasure I receive from them is beyond price.

I'm with you @Sooner .  It's just me but yes I use the "good stuff"  Fortunately my kids do want some of it when the time comes.  Glad to hear I'm not the only one that treats themselves to the cleaners.  I wear a lot of blouses (cotton) in the spring and summer and nothing like putting one on fresh from the cleaners.   It's my one luxury.

I should use my crystal and good china but I don’t use them very often.  I use everything else I have though, except guest towels, for obvious reasons.
