I cook daily with stainless steel and if I have anything stuck I use a stainless steel sponge. It comes right off.

Soak for several hours and then use an SOS or Brillo soap pad on it...as long as it is an old pan anyway. I wouldn't use one of those on a nice pan.

I've done that before, it's very easy to burn gunk on a Stainless Steel pan. I have some old SS cookware from a Wolfgang Puck collection. He does or did make a SS cleaner, but I've found a quick remedy is just boil a kettle of water, sprinkle some Cascade or other powder dishwasher detergent in the bottom of the pan, then pour the boiling water over it and let it sit for several hours. The gunk totally breaks up and leaves a nice shiny clean pan. If it's industrial strength gunk, the same principle works using Comet household cleaner because that doesn't scratch the surface of the pan. Good luck.
