I made an "unstuffed cabbage" casserole last night, and when I opened the package of ground beef there was a strong smell of ammonia...no doubt the "good" meat was mixed with pink slime that had been treated with ammonia to kill the eColi that's found in the undesirable parts.
I don't know if it was the smell of the meat that put me off and set an idea in my mind, but when I tasted the casserole, I didn't care for it at all; fortunately, the dog loves it.
I don't eat very much meat - I probably don't go through more than a pound or two of ground beef in a month - so from now on my ground beef will come from either a real butcher shop that grinds it fresh (I found a local one on-line that has rave reviews) or I'll get the grass-fed beef from Fresh Market. Both are pricier, but - as I said - I don't use all that much. It's certainly cheaper than feeding it all to the dog or throwing it away. What a waste!
