Use Alexa mainly as a timer.
The washer and dryer are in the garage so I can’t hear the buzzer. Also on a day DH checks his blood, we set it for 2 hours after he eats.
Love it for certain songs too.

"The Echo is continuously listening for its wake word – “Alexa” by default."
The DOT 2nd generation has "several" wake words. I have NEVER used the word "Alexa." Because of my "wake word" my DOT does not comes on from "background sounds." I've never heard it.
"Mute when not in use"
Will do the next time I plan my serial killings, bank robbings and/or have my side piece/jump off over.
I do shut it off when I am travelling.

Of course the music/comedy albums or podcasts are great at relieving boredom.
Timers that can be set without cleaning off your hands -- very helpful . Those are great when coloring your hair also !
My math skills are less than perfect and she is very helpful when cutting down or expanding a recipe.
I find her to be earning her keep . Of course I forget sometimes to ask starting with her name and then find myself getting angry at an electrical device -- oh-oh--
Yes.
I have a total of 8 Amazon Shows throughout my home. The Show has a video screen.
Besides the usual Alexa skills,
The Amazon Show is a wounderful hands free device, and a useful addition to my kitchen.
I have my own recipes saved in Alexa. I can call up my recipies anytime.
I search, and/or add new recipies, and step by step audio/video instructions how to make the dish.
I use the timer and temperture settings connected to temperature probes.
I use the weight/measurement conversion feature.
I use the grocery list. And forward to my phone/tablet.
Good luck.

I ask her to add items to my shopping list. And I ask for meal suggestions based on ingredients I have on hand or feel like using.
I also have her play music - or I play games like Jeopardy.
Setting a timer hands-free is very useful too.
I love my Echo Dot!
