IMO beans only taste good if slow cooked. So I always use my crockpot to cook them.

This, without the crock pot.

If I forget to soak my beans, I boil them on high for 3 minutes, then let them sit covered for 10 minutes.

Get your flu shot...because I didn't.

Old beans take a lot longer to cook, (if at all). I never add salt while they are cooking-makes them tough.

I like to cook beans and grains,(Farro, brown rice, etc.) at the same time.

Pot, beans, water to cover, 225 degrees, go take a long nap and get dressed.  Voila!  BEANS!

Hi @bonnielu  If you get a chance, check out Martha Stewart Cooking School - Legumes edition on line or on PBS.  I watched it yesterday and she discusses three methods for cooking beans:  Stovetop, pressure cooker and in the oven.  I love that show even if she is not making something that I would eat.  And why is it that when the husband does something they have to make a project out of it?  Woman LOL

Yes, which is why I always check the expiration date on the package.

Re: Advice needed for something that will cook beans

I love beans; pinto, great northern, October,  lima, and navy.  My brain has been trained to soak beans overnight, drain, pour into a heavy pot, cover with cold water, cook for several hours, then add ham or salt pork and cook until the bean soup is of desired consistency.

My Papaw didn't cook a lot, but was known to cook an awesome pot of pinto beans, and make great buckwheat cakes.   His bean soup secret was to turn up the heat the last 20-30 minutes of cooking, and add about one tablespoon of white sugar.   Since we have never fully replicated his pinto beans, we think his well water also made a big difference in taste.

Yes, hubby makes a project out of it.  They are just beans.  Nothing but water and beans.  Yuk.  He thinks they are healthy. I don't even want to list the other things he eats that ARE HEALTHY.  But then he can wear the suit he got married in... after almost 50 years.  My dress .... no way could I even think of ever wearing it..Woman LOL

Re: Advice needed for something that will cook beans

I have a great Nesco pressure cooker, but I do prefer to cook my beans in a crock pot.  Better texture and taste.  In fact, doing black eyed peas with a wonderful ham bone tomorrow.
