I volunteer at a food bank and we give out food that is a year expired. If it is over a year we toss it.

Those dates are determined so that the product will be sold at it's peak of flavor and freshness. It doesn't mean that the food immediately spoils after that date. If it was stored properly and the can looks okay.. it's not rusted or bulging, then I would certainly use it.
