single drop earrings

I purchased the single pearl earrings awhile ago and they are not lever backed but a single wire. The wire is so long and it sticks below my ear and kind of looks odd to me. Has anyone gotten this particular style? I was thinking of cutting off some of the wire but don't know if that will work. I probably should have returned but thought I could live with it but I find I don't wear them.
