How to clean antiqued jewelry that has oxyidized?
01-09-2016 09:50 PM
Hi @Phayla - Is it sterling? If you want to remove all oxidation, and it is badly tarnished, you could use a liquid silver cleaner. But if the piece has gemstones, you have to be very careful, because liquid cleaners are not safe for many gems. Now, if the jewelry has some oxidation there on purpose (to enhancer the detail of the piece), and you only want to remove tarnish from certain areas, you could just use a silver polishing cloth. The same goes if the piece has gemstones that cannot be dipped. Personally, I don't use dips on any of my jewelry, because they can pit precious metals over time. I stick to polishing cloths on all of my sterling. On my gold/platinum pieces, I use a mild dishwashing detergent (like Dawn) and a soft toothbrush. Good luck!
