Well, I ordered the Joan Rivers gardenia bee pin as an advanced order. I've been wanting it for over a year and kept canceling, then re-ordering until it was no longer available. I always felt that I should spend the money for something more practical. I'm just glad that I'm getting another chance at it. It's due to ship toward the end of November. I don't mind waiting for it and I'm not sure what the OP's problem with this is. You certainly can't just pick this pin up 'elsewhere readily'!

I've only done the advance order thing once. If I feel moved to buy something, it's because I really want it. Waiting doesn't do anything for me. If I see a piece that I just love and can only get it on advance order, then the chase is on to see if I can find a similar piece I can love just as much somewhere else. More often than not, I find it elsewhere and buy it right away.

The one thing I like about this delayed delivery is that it gives the purchaser plenty of time to re-think and perhaps change their mind and cancel the order.

The Q does this so they don't have to stock and warehouse the item, saves them a boatload of money. They can just ask for the item to be drop-shipped to you as it becomes available, but they don't know on the front end exactly when that will be, but they have your guarantee of purchase so it's counted as a sale.
It's a numbers racquet and they aren't out any money if the product fails to come through or you change your mind in the interim.
I hate it because I'm never certain of getting what I ordered until it's in my hot little hand, which could be month's later.

I have bought advanced order items several times. I know when it is expected to arrive when I order the item so know full well it won't be coming in the next week. Advanced orders do not bother me. I do believe it is a way to order what is needed and not be stuck with items that don't sell. A lot of times they call it "fresh from the fair," which sounds a little odd to me. Why? Because if they didn't find things they liked at "the fair," what was scheduled to air? One item, fine. But numerous items?

JTV does this too, except they don't tell you it is coming from an outside vendor and they don't have it in their warehouse to ship, your first clue is it is like a months out delivery on your order sheet. That happened to me once, I canceled the order and now if I find something I like I call and make sure it is in stock.

99.999% of what I buy is impulse. I don't "need" anymore jewelry. I like those advance orders occasionally. They are like the elastic waistband, they let the budget stretch a bit. I guess I'm morally bankrupt, and frankly I don't care. Not organized one bit. And, no, I don't use credit cards. I also quit using Easy Pay.

This method is to their clear advantage in that they only order pretty much what they know they've already sold. There's little risk to them of being stuck with inventory they then have to pay to house. Moreover, they haven't put any long term money up front because they know as soon as they ship it to you, it'll be paid for, so their 'investment' in the order is short-term and provides certain cash-flow advantages. Advantages to us? Well, simply put, there are none, other than the longer term we have to potentially change our minds and cancel an order that takes to long to come to fruition...
