I have had a beautiful large amethsyt (emerald cut) sitting in my jewelry box forever. I would like to get it set into a ring. I don't plan on wearing this on a daily basis since I change out my jewelry constantly. I brought it to a local jeweler (tiny shop) when I was getting a new battery put in a watch. She said it would be ridiculously expensive to have it set in gold and she was looking at a silver setting. She said she had none that would fit the gemstone. She basically implied that I would better off just purchasing a ring already set. That could have been a sales tactic to purchase something in her shop. I don't have the exact dimensions but it is probably at least 7 carats. Before going to another jewelry store is it not worth it to spend the $ at this time with the price of metals. Thanks for your advices.
