Ring is NOT what QVC claims it to be

I very recently listed a ring on ebay that I had purchased in 2005 from QVC. It was advertised as a 14k gold Australian opal. It's a beautiful ring--I just don't wear it any more, so I decided to put it up for sale. It sold on ebay within 2 hours. The buyer received the ring yesterday and promptly sent me an email asking for a refund--stating that the ring is marked 14 RGP--which means it is rolled gold plated and NOT solid 14k. Nowhere in the description is that stated--it only says 14k gold. Has anyone else had a similar issue? I am waiting for customer service to open this morning to see what they say. I'd appreciate any feedback.

That could be also manufacturer's mark. Did anyone ever took the ring to the jewelers to be tested?

Re: Ring is NOT what QVC claims it to be

I don't have this ring, so I can't address the specifics of the ring or the hallmark. But solid gold is an almost meaningless term, because everyone thinks it means something else. To me, solid gold means the item is not hollow, that the karat gold content stated is solid... like a brick. If you cut it open, it's all the same karat gold inside, no air spaces, no other materials, nothing else. Most womens jewelry is hollow these days, therefore not solid, by my definition.

To others, solid gold means that the item is all gold, what ever the karat is and that there are no other metals or resins, etc. It's not plated, clad, overlay, etc. But the item may be hollow, like a tubular hoop earring or a stampato bracelet, or a hollow wire necklace, or even electroform.

And to some, solid gold means 24K gold. After all 14K is 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals in the alloy. 14K is only 58.5% pure gold.

Get your ring back, give the idiot a refund, and sell it to someone else.

RGP is the manufacturer's hallmark, and the ring is 14k.

RGP is the manufacturer. Tell her to get it tested before you refund her.

Re: Ring is NOT what QVC claims it to be

If it says RPG that does, in fact, mean that it is rolled gold plated which is when a thin sheet of gold is plated onto other metals. It isn't considered 14K if it is plated.

How much did you pay for it - that is usually a big giveaway as to whether it is gold and not gold plate. If it seems to good to be true then it usually is.

As some have mentioned, getting it back and trying to sell it again as 14K if it is labeled RPG is not right and can get you banned on some sales sites.
