Regarding Doublets

What is the reason behind the use of all the doublets in jewelry on Q now? Are the stones of lesser quality and putting the quartz on top of it makes it look better, or exactly what is the explanation for this trend with all the "high end" designers? Is it so you can't spot a crack or flaw in the stone?
