Question about Vermeil

I have never bought Vermeil. I am a gemstone person who likes interesting gemstones set in 14K gold or 10K gold or SS and I like rings. I see a lot now set in Vermeil, I probably won't buy any set like that, but if I did, wouldn't the Vermeil wear off the back of rings quite fast? Unfortunately in today's world of costly gold I think we will see more of this, so I was wondering how they hold up, for those that either have it or know about it.
