Looking for some outside opinions.

My DH has a ring from a great grandfather, it is a yellow gold signet ring.

I would like to have repaired for an anniversary gift for him, it will be a surprise.

Due to its age the initials are very worn.

I took it to my very talented and trusted jeweler and here are my options.

What would you do?

1- size it, clean it, polish it. Done.

2- size it, have a new gold faceplate added and have his great grandfathers initials engraved into the new faceplate.

3- size it, have a new gold faceplate added and have DH initials engraved into the new faceplate.

I will save my vote till the end.

#1, preserve the memory

if your DH doesn't remember the elder that well, then do your DH initials.

Re: Opinion please men's ring

I say either 2 or 3, depending on how attached he was to the grandfather.  If not so much, then I would have your DH's initials put on it.

Because you said this is a surprise, I'd say size it, clean it, polish it, done. I would NOT alter the face in any way without his express permission. If he tells you he wants it changed, that's different, but unless he has specifically said he wished for that, I would not risk changing it without his permission. That's just asking for trouble.

I also vote #1.

It won't be the same if you change it IMO.

How would your DH feel if you chose #2 or #3?

Re: Opinion please men's ring

Before you do any of that, are you sure he would want to wear it?  Many men don't like rings.

If so; I'd go with option 1.

1.  You could ask if he's interested in your options, but to deface the original would be a mistake you can't replace if he's upset.
