Re: Opinion please men's ring

Option # 1 for me too.  I collect vintage jewelry and I know that engraved things can't be brought back to the original condition.

Engraving used to be done by hand.  Today it is done by machine.  Machine engraving reduces the value of a vintage piece

Also, the ring is sentimental, so you shouldn't mess with it.

Re: Opinion please men's ring

OP here!

Good to know I was not "taking the easy way out" as someone said when I told them my plan for the ring.

Option #1 was my plan.

The idea of losing the original engraving and character seemed like an awful idea.  It was losing a piece of history.

I am going to take the ring in to sized and cleaned and I know my DH will be thrilled!!!

Thanks for the opinions and insight. Smiley Happy

Looking for some outside opinions.

My DH has a ring from a great grandfather, it is a yellow gold signet ring.

I would like to have repaired for an anniversary gift for him, it will be a surprise.

Due to its age the initials are very worn.

I took it to my very talented and trusted jeweler and here are my options.

What would you do?

1- size it, clean it, polish it. Done.

2- size it, have a new gold faceplate added and have his great grandfathers initials engraved into the new faceplate.

3- size it, have a new gold faceplate added and have DH initials engraved into the new faceplate.

I will save my vote till the end.

I vote # 3.  The ring was passed down to him from his great grandfather but it's your husband's ring now so it should have his initials.

I woudn't do anything to an heirloom piece as a surprise. I wouldn't size it or polish it even. He needs to make the decision himself. It can be an important part of the sentimental value of an heirloom piece that it's exactly as his great grandfather had it. That you can slip it on you finger and feel that great grandpas fingers were much bigger or smaller.
