Jewels of the Maharajahs exhibit - Legion of Honor in SF

[ Edited ]

If anyone is near San Francisco, you may want to consider attending the new exhibit at the the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.

This necklace is the showpiece of the exhibit, designed by Cartier in 1937 for an Indian maharajah, a striking ruby and diamond piece later worn by Gloria Guinness at Truman Capote’s famous Black and White Ball in 1966.

There are many other striking and unusual pieces of not only jewelry but bejeweled daggers and household items on display using diamonds, emeralds, rubies, pearls, and more.

The jewelry was designed and worn by men and only later some pieces were redesigned for women.  The Spanish wife of one maharajah had an emerald piece originally worn by a royal elephant redesigned for her own private use!

I was there yesterday and have never seen so many large and sparkling jewels in one place.  Interestingly enough, quite a few were not cut for brilliance, but almost raw.

Was anyone else able to see the Nefertitti collection when it toured the US? It was another fabulous collection of precious colored gemstones set in amazing designs.

There are many elements: wind, fire, water
But none quite like the element of surprise
