Found this information at a site that sells both ultrasonics and steamers for the jewelry industry.

After the item to be cleaned has been in the ultrasonic for 30 to 60 seconds, it is ready for

the Rinse and the Dry cycles with the steamer. The steamer uses heat and pressure

to remove the tarnish creating substances left on the item after ultrasonic cleaning.

The steamer leaves the item dry and ready to be displayed, sold, or shipped.

Used together, these two methods represent the best possible way of cleaning: the

ultrasonic loosens the dirt and tarnish, and the steamer removes the dirt and tarnish,

rinses and dries, so that the items will look their best and will increase sales and customer

satisfaction. Do not let the item dry between using the ultrasonic and steamer to avoid

leaving marks.

DH got me an ultrasonic cleaner for my jewelry years ago and I use it all the time on all my jewelry except pearls and very soft stones. I just use dish soap and the pieces come out sparkling clean. Worth the investment!

If my jewelry needs a good cleaning, I take it to the jeweler, but I can honestly recommend Sparkle Sparkle from HSN. Does a great job on all precious gems and it is all natural. Comes with little brushes to get into the nooks and crannies really well. Give it a try.
