Hand lotion and rings: Remove or keep on?

I love the idea of putting a wedding ring on and NEVER taking it off. But every time I apply lotion I tend to take the rings off so they won't lose their luster (I think?!) or something. Do you tend to keep rings on when you put on hand lotion, or take them off? If you keep them on, how do you maintain their sparkle and shine?
