@Q4u  I have a question for you regarding your cartilage piercing:

I JUST took mine out after 5 months because it's still sore and I now have a lump on either side of the holes. The hoop that was in it came out (it was an endless hoop) and when I took it out to clean...I can't see ANY hole to put a stud in so...I gave up.

Is the healing so long normal? Should I go now and attempt to put a stud in (took it out this morning)? Why does no one talk about the length of time it takes to heal? Did you get these lumps?

SORRY @Shanus for going off topic of your thread but I don't know anyone in my "real" life who has dealt with this, lol!!!

Re: EARRINGS:STUDS, HOOPS OR OTHER?

I sound like some others — mom and dad wouldn’t let me pierce my ears as long as I lived at home. One of the first things I did as soon as I moved out was buy a set of self-piercing earrings and pierced my ears.  Of course they aren’t  aren’t straight. I’m paying for it now. No more dangles.

Just studs and a pair of 1” hollow hoop earrings. As a matter of fact, I ended up buying six pairs this weekend

I wear all kinds - if I go out it's usually Southwest style - but my fall back ones have always been hoops. Recently I discovered these in abalone by Kendra Scott, and I find myself wearing them a lot (they're easy to grab and go). Perfect for summer!  Smiley Happy

I am NEVER without earrings (unless I am sleeping or in the shower).  I like hoops or dangles, never studs.

I like movement with my earrings.

Funny, though, my coworker cannot stand earrings that move, she ONLY wears studs!!

I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend, til death, your right to say it

I wear 14k leverbacks.  If I buy posts, I take them to a local, independent jeweler and have them put on leverbacks.

Posts have always bugged me when on the phone or sleeping.  I don't trust fishhooks on bit, no even with those ugly little rubber things.  I have a couple pair of hoops but hoops aren't my cup of tea either.

I wear hoops most of the time. omg I own so many hoops I can't even begin to say just how many. Since I can't wear rings, I have made quite a collection of earrings...mostly hoops but many studs as well. My last major stud purchase was a pair of Moissanites. Gorgeous!  Then I bought a pair of neon apatite hoops! They glow! I want to get a second set of piercings but my doc advised me not to because I have scleroderma and the holes might not turn out the way they are suppose to. They might get scar tissue overly grown and cause a huge lump...yuck.

I am not @Q4u, but I will tell you about my two attempts at cartildge piercing (2 different ears).  They never healed, even after about a year each.  I always had to be careful of them, how I laid my head of the pillow, how I brushed my hair.  The soreness never went away. I finally just plain gave up, removed them. I still have little bumps, but no more soreness.

@Peaches McPhee and @Sahmlam

I said a year but it was more than that, maybe closer to  year and a half.  Always hurt and it wasn't until about two years that I realized that they no longer hurt if I knocked one of them..  If I took out the earrings I had a devil of a time finding the holes again but I had put too much time and energy into them to take them out.  I have since learned that cartlidge piercing should not be done with one of of those power piercing guns.  Should be hand done so not to make the cartlidge (for lack of a better word) explode in there.  It took close to two years to feel absolutely nothing.  Now that they are healed and don't hurt anymore, I'm very glad I put up with it.

I never got the little lumps so can't address that.  I understand now that Cartlidge is terrible for the amount of time and pain from piercing and the gun makes it worse.  They (the ones piercing should TELL people what is involved in Cartlidge piercing and I think it's wrong not to.)  My oldest son had the bars put in both ears... had it done by a professional in a reputable Tattoo Shop.  They went through the top Cartlidge then down into both sides of the interior ear cartlidge then down the bottom back, both ears!  It took half the time for his ears to feel normal again compared to mine.  His were done by hand and he nearly passed out!

To answer your questions, yes, the long healing time is normal and especially long if you had it done with a piercing gun.  If you decide to continue with a stud you should be able to get it in but it's hard, difficult to find but not impossible and half the time I "felt" around for it with the stud post.  I think they don't talk about it so you (as a customer) will go ahead and let them do it.... also I really don't think many of the piercers know much about it.  JMHO

Good luck, if you decide to re-insert and stick it out, I hope it goes very well for you... Woman Happy

A bright shiny stud, usually a cz.

But.....I recently bought a pair of Super cheap dream catcher earrings in silver.

Really love these.

Re: EARRINGS:STUDS, HOOPS OR OTHER?

I prefer 2" hoops or dangles.  I used to wear smaller ones but I like earrings that pop out from under my dark medium length bob styled hair.  Studs would never be seen.

Since I have a cool complexion I like white metals and rarely wear yellow gold.
