What's the deal with black spinel?

Why are some jewelry vendors making a big deal out of it, like Carol Brodie? Like it's so rare or so beautiful, I mean it's OK but I don't get what is so special about it.

I ask because to me it just looks exactly like black onix. The only difference that I can see is that one is pricey and the other is not.

What am I missing, please educate me. {#emotions_dlg.blink}
