ANY CHRONOGRAPH WATCH OWNERS?

I can't say that I'm a watch collector, but I like to rotate the ones I own.

For a while now, I've been tempted to purchase a chronograph watch ....  and have questions.

First, do you actually use any of the little sub dials?

Second, some of them I've seen online look very "busy" and I wonder if it's difficult to tell the actual time?

Third, are the little subdials difficult to independently adjust?

Fourth .....   please share any opinions or feedback based on your experience.

TIA !!!

Re: ANY CHRONOGRAPH WATCH OWNERS?

hey tinkrbl44. i wear a cartier pasha chronograph. had it for years. no, i don't use the sub dials at all. i've always loved the look of a chronograph watch, though it can be weighty. it's very easy to read the time because the face is large enough. i'll post a photo so you can see how it looks. it's an automatic, which is the only kind of watch i wear. i've been very happy with it. no problems so far. good luck with the hunt!

ps, posted the photo but took it down

because it looked so large! i can post it if

you're interested 😊

[ Edited ]

I probably have at least 30 chronographs,  maybe more.   Various brands.   Kind of stupid because I never use the chrono features.   I'm wearing a Ripka chrono today.  Different watch everyday.  I don't adjust subdials unless one is the date.  They adjust themselves with the pushers. They are harder than other watches to read.

I've got this one which is impossible to quickly read.

Re: ANY CHRONOGRAPH WATCH OWNERS?

I own many chronograph watches.   Some are easier to read than others, it depends upon the dial.  In general, telling time is no problem on a chronograph watch,  but reading the chrono subdials can be difficult on some watches.  And while the chrono layout will vary with the movement used in the watch,  on most chrono watches the time of day second hand is in one of the chrono dials and the large second hand is part of the chronograph and should not be used all the time (the use of the chrono takes more of your battery life away).

It's very rare that I use any of the chrono features,  but they add interest to some watches.

There are also multifunction watches,  which look like chronographs,  but are not.  The subdials on these watches are usually for day and date features.  They are less sophisticated movements,  but the information can be handy for everyday use.

Using the chronograph is easy.  But adjusting the chrono, if it needs calibrating,  can be a challenge.  The sequence of the procedure varies with the specific watch movement.

Hope this helps.

I own a silver, gold and rose gold Chrono Watch.  I never use the sub dials, but I love the look of the Chrono watch.

Re: ANY CHRONOGRAPH WATCH OWNERS?

@Tinkrbl44  I love the look of the chronograph watches...the thickness, bulk & "boyfriend" look. I also have several watches in rotation and try if possible to get the ones that do not need batteries. I have an electric watch winder on my dresser. Nope. Don't give a fig what time it is in Japan or never in enough of a rush to use the stop watch features. For me, except for the date dial, the rest are decoration. I try to purchase watches w/ no more than 3 functions just because I don't like a row of stems on the side  of the watch. After Christmas I purchased a Seiko one at Penney's 1/2 price...two tone, lg. face, date + 2 other dials & love it. They all come w/ instructions and the date is the easiest to set & that and changing the time twice a year is all I have to think about.
