For white clothes (underwear, socks, etc) and also sheets and towels, I use hot water/cold rinse.

For colored clothes I use warm water/warm rinse and sometimes warm water/cold rinse.

Delicate items I use cold water/cold rinse.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@Pooky1Mostly cold water for regular clothing.   Towels and sheets hot water as well as whites - especially socks (unless washing instructions say otherewise).  Pet bedding usually hot also.

Usually warm wash with cold rinse. We almost never use hot water and I’ll use cold water for very delicate lingerie.

We have very few 'fancy' clothes, so most of my loads are hot water wash (and I have a full fill washer). I don't have the option of anything but a cold rinse, but I can manually run another wash cycle in hot or warm for the rinse if I need to for some reason.

I'm old fashioned and not going to change. I like most of our clothing and linens washed in hot. And I've not damaged things by doing so.

I do have a few nicer things that I'm more careful with, and use a warm cycle, which comes out closer to cold, then line dry.

Generally speaking, this is pretty much me, too, for the most part, but I do distinguish between light and dark colored clothing -

lights get washed in warm, darks in cold

Everything gets rinsed in cold.

Bathroom, bed and kitchen items are hot wash, hot rinse.

Clothing is cold wash, cold rinse first, then a second wash with warm wash, warm rinse. I do this because of stains with the kids; especially socks.

Delicates (cashmere) cold and cold.

For towels, underwear, white sport socks I use hot water wash and rinse. Gotta kill those nasties in there!  For sheets, tablecloths and jeans, warm water and for all other clothes, cold water wash.
