I didn't mention this earlier because I tend to get long-winded, and I didn't want to change the direction of this thread...BUT...
My 4 1/2 year old AWN432... manual dial Speed Queen washer has developed an issue, a noise of metal rhythmically tapping against metal while agitating. It started about a month ago, around the time that I forgot a load of bedding was in the wash, and I left home, and came back to notice the load had gotten out of balance. This is the not the first time I've had a load get out of balance, but I have always been here to immediately stop and correct it, except this one time.
My husband finally took a look and noticed that the belt looks stretched and worn, and he identified the two metal pieces that touch on and off, idler lever area? and said that they ordinarily wouldn't touch. He says it just needs a new belt and that should solve the problem, that everything else should go back into its proper place, but who knows. He will change it this coming weekend.
I hope that is all that is wrong with it. I don't ever remember having to change a belt so soon, or ever, on past inexpensive washers, so I'm a little annoyed. Also, he spotted a little oil in the bottom of the washer frame and a little on the floor below. It would have come from the transmission, and probably should not be there. That is even more annoying, not knowing if it's going to go out and cost us more money.
I'll update on whether or not the belt solved the noise issue, so that anyone who searches here for future info will see my experience.

@faeriemoon The washer I just replaced was a GE Cabrio without the agitator. It cleaned beautifully. My issue with it was it getting off balance when I did sheets or a blanket, size (my fault..I need big for the dog blankets) and it really didn't last long.
@Pooky1 I did use my extra fill on the new maytag, it wasn't spectacular but it did fill higher. I wish it would fill to the top!

@SHOPR somehow your nic dropped off, wanted to let you know about the fill feature.
Just read your post about your speed queen. Yikes...sorry to hear- I swear It's always something. Every time I think I'm ahead I tell myself to stop thinking that way or something else will go wrong (and it usually does! UGH....good luck !)

Just a quick update on my Speed Queen washer. Upon opening the washer up to change the belt, my husband noticed new oil since the previous look a week before, so he can't change the belt until he stops the oil leak. The oil would just ruin the new belt.
As soon as more pressing matters are behind us, he will try to replace a bearing that may or may not be where the oil is seeping from. If that does not stop it, we will probably just use the washer until the transmission burns up, and then buy another washer. While the $300 transmission would be covered under warranty, labor is not covered at this point. To me, it is not worth the trouble of having a repairman in multiple times, plus the labor expense.
Frustrating at this point, 4 1/2 years into a machine that is supposed to last 25 years, says the salesman, but thankful that my husband and dad know how to figure out (and usually fix) issues such as this. I will update again in a few weeks.
@Jtdmum Sorry to hear that your Maytag doesn't truly fill up all the way, but I hope it's sufficient for your needs. Actually, neither did my Speed Queen. I made an adjustment in the back of the machine that raised the level a little more, so it does fill up full now. I don't know if it's possible in all washers, though. You might check YouTube. I'm sometimes amazed at how much information is there.

Another update on my Speed Queen washer mentioned above, hopefully the last update for a while.
On this model, from all info we can gather, it's all or nothing to stop the oil leak. Either change the whole $300 transmission, or don't. So we only changed the worn belt, and that did stop the metal on metal sound during agitation. But we will do nothing else, except keep an eye on the new belt (oil on it will cause faster failure) and oil accumulation from time to time. We placed paper under the washer to gauge how much oil drips from here on out.
No washer brand is without issues, it seems.
