need help with sewing machine question

i have a portable singer sewing machine. i am trying to teach my little grand daughter to sew, of course machine acting up. prob; top stetch is correct, but the under bottom stetch balls up. i have tried different threads, bobbins. bobbin cases iam pretty sure i am threading it correctly. please help if you can. i will try any suggestions. thanks, desperate grandma
