I am looking for a matelasse bed cover. I keep finding items that look exactly like what I'm looking for, but they are usually available as both a bedspread or a coverlet. both are cotton. both are quilted. and they look just alike.
how would you describe the difference? would a bedspread be a lighter weight? would a coverlet be heavier and more like a quilt?

Look at the measurements for each item. A bedspread is larger & covers the entire bed, including going up over the pillows. A coverlet just covers the top & sides of the matress. You would then probably want a skirt to cover the foundation, & maybe also shams to cover the pillows.

The difference is the size. A bedspread covers the whole bed, a coverlet is smaller just to cuddle with.

I have a white matelasse coverlet in a paisley pattern with a scalloped edge on all 4 sides that I purchased in a queen size for a double sized bed in order that it would cover the bed and drape nearly to the floor on 3 sides. I use it with matching shams and love the look.
Although I cannot address your questions regarding material weight, in my experience, a bedspread covers the entire bed and pillows and may have a decorative edge on 3 sides with the side that covers the pillows being plain and straight, while a coverlet has an identical edge, whether decorative or not, on all 4 sides and is used to cover the top of the bed with a few inches draping over the sides. IHTH.

hi mocha!
that's exactly what i have on my bed. i have a cream colored matelasse spread, and my sheets are another shade of cream and i have a mocha colored (lol) pillow and a great big chenille dusty pink pillow. oh, and then when gracie gets up on the bed i have a nice off white fleecy throw that she likes to snuggle in ... kinda like the one princess daisy uses.
but, yes ... i agree that the difference is the size. i have a headboard and footboard, along with side rails ... and this spread is just big enough to cover the top of the bed and down the sides just far enough to cover the matteress but not cover the side rails too much.
hope you find what you are looking for!

I just purchased a beautiful Matilisse bedspread & pillow covers for one of my beds. I got it in white, but they also mentioned light blue. It came from Belk. We are only five minutes from Bellk here, but I purchased mine on line, since they didn't have it in the show. If you don't have one, go online at Belk.com and you can have it delivered almost anywhere. I think you'll be pleased with the quality and weight of the fabric.
