@webbgarner1 I have asthma and MUST have air flow or an go into an asthma attack. I keep a small fan near my bed and run that at night plus the white nose is nice for sleeping so I understand the medical aspect.
Please don't think I was insulting your HVAC system. In my experience, when shopping for a home, ceiling fans are used because the air flow isn't very good and/the cooling system isn't the greatest in that room (usually upstairs). It gets hot and humid here but there are areas far worse so if you need them, you need them.
It's funny: I've been in gorgeous towhouses where you sweat to death due to lack of cool temps and air flow in the bedroom areas but have been in McMansions where the upstairs is just as cool as the basement despite huge rooms, lots of windows and extreme high ceilings. You would think the townhouse (or smaller house) would be easier to cool down but no, it's often the opposite. And no, no ceiling fans in the McMansions/huge house but plenty in the townhomes.
Good luck with your ceiling fan shopping. : )

@SahmIam Oh, I did not think you were insulting. Sorry to hear about your asthma. I watched my brother suffer all of his life with it. Hope you are doing well. I have heart issues and get very short of breath. Also a lot of the micidaction I take makes it difficult to take the heat. I know what you mean about problems with airflow from place to place.
My husband and I also are addicted to the " white noise" of having something running.
I do wish you good health, difficulty breathing is a terrible thing.

We have Hunter ceiling fans in every room and use them daily year round.

@RedTop Thank, it sounds like a lot of folks here really like their hunter fans.

@webbgarner1 wrote:@151949 I like the sound of your living room fan. I agree, I am ok with spending a little more to get the quality, some things I will scrimp on but like you, I do not want to hear a squeeking warbling fan. Online I have seen a kichler fan "cortez" that has the uplihgt, and do not have to install the downlight. It would be a strethc though at 14" in height.
I have seen some of those with the dome lights, ship lights, interesting look.
Thanks for the info. I believe I read the other day you posted that you fell, was that you. Hope you are doing better. I feel for you, I fell in my kitchen in August and got 3 compression fractures in my back. In 2003 I fell while walking my dog, broke my lower leg.
Just sitting here looking at it I would say ours is easily 14" from the ceiling to the lowest point. We have 10 1/2 ft ceilings so it's a good height for us.
I am still a bit sore but recovering well from my fall, thanks for asking. This was my third fall in a year - the first one , last June, was down a flight of stairs onto a concrete patio. Broke 3 ribs , injured my back and generally just shook everything up - took months to get over it. Then I fell in the BR because my DH got the floor wet and didn't clean it up. Came down on my knees that time and they are still painful. So this fall has been relatively minor.
