It is time for us to replace our generator.  I think we should opt for a whole home generator.

Does anyone with one care to comment?  What brand did you buy, how does it perform?

Would appreciate your views.

@JustJazzmom , do I recall you recently had one installed?

TIA.  LM

I am looking forward to the responses as well. I am stuck having to live in Texas, and we all know how well the power grid holds up under pressure.

We had a tornado rip through our development last summer and we were without power for 5 days.  We contacted a company to install a Generac but they are in short supply in our area.  We have been waiting a year to have it installed.

We want a Generac but it takes a while to get one right now. Our electrician is waiting on 2 for customers. He said it's been 3 months. He said there's a part they are having issues getting.

You can go to Generac online to enter info to see what size you need plus price. You will also have to pay for a transfer switch. The electrician told us we would also have to call a plumber since we would connect to natural gas.

We have a regular generator now but it's noisey.

We installed a Generac whole house generator year after Sandy hit us in NW NJ and we were without power for 10 days.  No heat (house got down to 40), water or toilet function and electricity.  We went with a 10,000 kw and very pleased with it.  We have propane so that isn't the best scenario because we are at delivery co. mercy but haven't had an issue with that.  We had to decide what power was most important for us to be put on this generator and we chose all the above.  It also depends what circuits are now together so you may not have all appliances or rooms on the generator but we took the most necessary and eliminated the extra.  The company you choose will explain it all.  Our refrigerator and freezer are on now as well.  The largest generators cost more but also use more propane or your type of fuel.  We do get many outages for various reasons, some short but some a few days and it has always gone on.  We do have it serviced every year to ensure proper running and never an issue.

We have a Generac whole house generator installed after Sandy hit us in Connecticut.  IMO they are VERY pricey, but when making an investment such as this you really go "get what you pay for".  Ours is reliable and we have not had ANY issues.  Just be certain whatever brand you get to go to a reputable dealer and follow the recommendede maintainence schedule. My son just replaced his and there was a VERY long wait as generators are in short supply these days FYI.  We wish we had it installed years ago!  Good luck!
