Well, I just got an education! Okay, so "yellow out" is the brand name of a pool algaecide. The laundry product is indeed now called white brite. It can be used in a top or front load machine. There were some helpful q&a on the Amazon page. They say it's only for pure whites, and you can use it as a presoak or directly on a stain, as well as in the wash cycle. I'm going to try it. Anybody else? Let's post back about how it works.

i am going to tell my mom about this! she still loves her plain white ked canvas shoes and likes to keep them that way. but bleach will sometimes cause them to yellow.
