I'm wanting to attach a rope from the metal handrail that's beside the steps leading up to our back porch out to where our car port is. My sister, who's legally blind, has trouble walking from the car up to the porch, so am thinking having a rope there for her to hold on to would help. Can attach the other end to the metal framework of the car port. Just have no idea what material would be the best to use for this purpose--nylon, plastic, polypropylene, etc. Nor am I sure what thickness. Would really appreciate any advice on this. Thanks.

A boating supply store would carry a heavier, water resistant rope if you live near big water.

Home Depot has roping in various widths and cut to order lengths.

If this is in full view of the street you may get a visit from your building inspector.

Rub your hand across it before you buy it. You don't want her to be getting little splinters of plastic material from it. Make certain it is smooth.

Unless the rope is very taut, I don't think it will be supportive. As someone with bad knees (as happens to many older folks), I think no steps should be allowed anywhere without good, solid, rigid handrails that a person can use for support .  Metal or wood preferably.

@VancouverUSAgal  Check with your City's Aging Partners Services. Often they have a Home Handiman service for handicapped and/or senior citizens. This sounds like a perfect project for them to help purchase and install. I believe the cost is based upon your sister's income, but is very reasonable. Thanks everyone for answering. I asked my cousin about this, and he will help me with putting it up when he comes to visit sometime. We already have, as I mentioned before, a metal handrail to assist with going up the back porch steps (only 2 steps, by the way), but need something to help my sister go from the car to there. He thought a rope might be a good idea as well, but pointed out something I hadn't thought of--a support would probably need to be added midway so the rope wouldn't sag at that point. My only other concern is how to get the lawn mower over to that side of the yard once the rope is put up. One problem at a time.
