I agree - a coverlet is used in the summer instead of a comforter.
In my home I have a comforter for looks only because I live in Fl and it would be too warm to sleep under , then under the comforter is a coverlet . When we go to bed we pull the comforter off and sleep under the coverlet.

I bought one, a beautiful beige one with wonderful stitching . Its way too heavy and ended not using it. It sits in my closet because its too beautiful to give away. I like blankets or comforter.

BigBro6, you pretty much said it all. I owned a coverlet that was a beautiful ecru color. It was a very heavy and tightly woven. There was beautiful raised embroidered pattern on the top side. It was thinner than a blanket. I didn't know what to do with it, other than use it as a top cover for its beauty. I eventually gave it away as a donation.

Coverlets are also used over a plain spread to add another layer and for decorative purposes.

I think a coverlet is just something pretty you like on top of your bed. It's not necessarily meant for warmth. Is that right? If that's the case, I have a coverlet. It's a very lightweight blanket/quilt type thing. We love the design of it and the color. However, underneath that we have a down blanket, then top sheet. And in the colder months we've been known to put a heavier down blanket on top at night. Oh, and a little quilt for the dog so he doesn't ruin the "coverlet." Geez!

Oh man! I've been using an ugly old left over flowery sheet for that! Really defeats the purpose of purchasing a beautiful comforter...then cover it w/ a big ole ugly sheet!
LOL...I am going to get a coverlet to collect the hair instead! Sure will look a lot better!

cover for bed: a usually decorative cover for a bed, placed over the other covers when the bed is not being used.
I got one for my bed when I purchased the bed in a bag collection from Macy's. My dog sleeps on the coverlet and it has saved my comforter. It is quilted and it is heavy. They are really quite nice. My comforter still looks brand new. It really adds something to your bed. I wash the coverlet and dry it. It comes out looking new.

Mamalady's description was what I have experienced. It is about the size of a quilt and should be quilted, but without any "stuffing" inside. People often call them quilts, as they look so much like one.
I have used them as the top covering for my bed, just as you would a bedspread or a quilt. I don't layer it with other bed coverings, but use it with just sheets and maybe a blanket.
