I only know it by sofa table. That's what furniture stores in my area call it.

i looked online and furniture stores are calling them console tables. who knew? We used to call them ""the tall tables in back of the couch""

I've come to refer to them as sofa tables, but think I do remember there used to be another word in vogue for them... Can't for the life of me remember what it was...

It is a console table. A Parson's table is a particular style; simple, sleek, minimalist, modern, not to be confused with a console. For example the photo above is a console, but not a Parson's table.

Sofa table or Console table is what I came up with on google. I'm thinking that it's like a "headboard" for a sofa, rather than a bed...and, if that's the case, a coffee table might be classified as a footboard for the couch/sofa?!?!?!

As a footnote (LOL), 25 years ago we purchased a gorgeous "etagere" when we moved to So. Carolina to use as an entertainment unit for our TV/VCR/tapes, etc. That sucker was made from high quality Oak, that we had to assemble at home, and it weighed at least 90 pounds - it's over 6' high and over 6' wide with open shelving, a cubby (for our picture albums) and a closed storage portion with a door. Very functional!
The salespeople strapped the box to the roof rack of our 1976 Plymouth Volare Station Wagon and we hauled it 25 miles home, thankfully without incident - I feared the box falling off and possibly injuring/killing someone, or damage to the roof or the rack it was tied to on "our Vo"...DH and I put that etagere together in a matter of minutes and, it's still in our living room (a.k.a. The Man Cave), today! It's been through 3 long-distance moves (and the movers wanted to dismantle it but couldn't!) and it looks just as beautiful as the day we bought it! I can't recall how much we paid for it, but the store was closing and it was a final sale, but I know it was under $100 (a great buy).

Hi loopy!
Yes a Parsons table or anything "Parson" is very minimalist/ Like Shaker style

I'll vote for (1) console table, (2) sofa table, and (3) hall table, in that order.

On 12/15/2014 Drythe said:""We"" called it a library table although it wasn't in a library.
Library tables are big for spreading out books and papers. The sofa table is usually highr and not deep at all.
