To me the texture of the sofa looks so inviting and comfy!  I don't see the color as a problem unless you are really doing a lot of outside stuff and coming in and using that room.  Today's fabrics are great to clean up as well.

 

It's funny because to me it looks anything but cold or formal.  I'm way more of a minimalist than I was in the 80s when I had too much stuff.  I'm glad to be rid of it, so this looks relaxing to me.
