Sounds like a costly job which is why I jumped on the offer from my water company to insure the water line coming into the house from the street.  If there is a leak they cover it.  It costs around $6 a month.  Ten years ago I also had coverage thru them for the sewer line.  A week before Christmas and after a big snowstorm dropping 15" of snow my sewer backed up and turns out the whole line had to be replaced as the pipe had collapsed.  The lawn was a mess but the day long job cost me nothing.

I am from Massachusetts and we had a cellar there but most homes in Florida are built on a concrete slab. My house has older copper pipping and some of the chemicals they process water with breaks down the copper. So ultimately, anyone with copper piping might have this problem and not know it yet or will have leaky pipes. I had a leak in my garage that was fixed several years ago. So I most likely will bite the bullet and get my house re-piped. My sister is a Realtor in Massachusetts and she said there are major mold problems there with mold in the attic. The home inspectors usually find it when a pre-sale inspection is done. So I guess problems can happen anywhere.

@Kachina624

Our problem was caused by Kytec plumbing and there were thousands of homes here in LV with this problem.  So many that companies were brought in from other states to take care of all these homes.  They were fixed over a period of a couple of years and most of the homes were fixed before leaks developed, ours included.   I don't remember what the cost was for our home but like I said, we got our money back when the class action suit was settled.  It was a dirty, messy job and I hope I don't run across anything like that again.  Even though things were  sealed off, dust still was everywhere in this house when they were finished.

I never even heard of pipe insurance, so of course I didn't have it.  There was one primary builder that built many of the homes in my city in the 70s and 80s.  They are the ones responsible for the cheap pipe.

For those with polybutylene piping,

watch for a new class action (my son's house had this piping but was not within the years of the first class action Jan 1st 1978 to July 31, 1995)
