Your home should reflect what you like, not what "they" tell you is in style.  We only have a wallpaper border in one room, but I find wallpaper to be interesting and would consider it.  Painting techniques can also give the appearance of wallpaper.

I have had wallpaper in three rooms for years and I still LOVE IT!

I see no reason to remove it before I die.  After that the kids will have to deal with it when they sell the house.
