As for those yelling about the landlord needing to do the cleaning/painting, yep it's a thing for sure, but in the day of Covid, nothing is going as normal, and no one is going to clean to suit me, going in on someone else's 'dirt'. So I'd be cleaning after the cleaning people did it anyway. I'm guessing that especially now, if your friend wants it done well, right now, doing it yourselves is really the best bet anyway!

@Mominohio   When we were done cleaning, the apartment smelled really clean!!

@Mom2Dogs   Always wash from the top down.  If there is any dirty water it flows downward but I would change the water if it got dirty.  My mom always washed walls when I was growinig up and us kids would help her.  She used Spic n Span because you did not need to rinse it.  I am surprised that people still wash walls but I was thinking about it myself because the landlord does not redecorate once you're in.

@Katcat1   My mom used Spic n Span too. I too did not know people still did it today. Boy was that water black when she was done in the kitchen.

Many years back I helped a friend wash her walls with TSP.  She had been in the apartment for many years and the landlord would not pay to clean or paint the walls so we did it.  It was a lot of work.  Looking back it would have been much easier to just put a fresh coat of paint on the walls.
