Re: The Influence of Home Series

Such an interesting topic, @Desert Lily .   I was influenced, at a young age, by design magazines, including "AD" which you mention, and through them, by certain designers who I thought were just the greatest, like Albert Hadley, or the late Georgina Fairholme.   I collected a few design books, such as those featuring English country decorating, which were also influential with me.

My parents influenced me too--  they grew up with traditional furnishings, of course, but later, from the Fifties on, they had an affinity for 'midcentury modern' too, and bought accordingly.  From them I picked up a split personality of loving mostly traditional and vintage, but with a bit of midcentury and art deco thrown in.

I do selectively watch design shows and design youtube, but that doesn't seem to influence me much at all, for good or for ill!

Re: The Influence of Home Series

In the house I lived in previous to the one I live in now, I was greatly influenced by do it yourself projects on Trading Spaces.  I learned how to make a padded upholstered headboard from Vern and I painted horizontal stripes in the same color but in flat and high gloss in my dining room that I got from Hildy.

I watch a lot of HGTV.....I love Flip or Flop, Love it or List it, and House Hunters, to name a few......

We moved about 11 months ago now, and in our new home, it is decorated much more Modern Farmhouse, all because that trend was all over and I loved it as well as my husband. In our old home where we lived for over 30 years, it was definitely much more traditional!

I know those trends and decorating ideas came a lot from HGTV.....some trend I like, while others I can do without, and most of them arent too permanent, so they can be changed quite easily if you tire of them.

I do not have Granite Countertops, or Farmhouse Sink-I,  too like a double sink in my kitchen, so there are still some thing sI wouldn't change based on trends!!!! I also don't want a house full of gray, just because thats the trend right now!

I think its better if small things are incorporated into your lifestyle and decor-much easier to change if you don't like it after a while! But YES, definitely influenced by HGTV for me!

Re: The Influence of Home Series

Yes I am influenced by what I see the designers do on TV--and enjoy a few of the shows alot--and if I can ever find a place to buy I know what I want and don't want. Was married to a carpenter who worked in the housing trade for 47 years so kind of know what is involved in the bones of a house. I definitely know what I like tho. Have a list going of must haves. Lived in the same house the ex-spouse built for 35 years and "settled" for things I ended up hated. will not do that again. As for doing this stuff because it is the new "in" thing----nope----will do things that make me happy.
