@NickNack I've had my share of termites over years. I looked at your picture....I don't see any 'shavings like' stuff (poo) anywhere there. Mine you could clearly see all those shavings things. And of course the rot in the wood - like Swiss cheese.
I know there are several types - I used to do a lot of construction and now my mind cannot recall a thing. Here, we must 'tent' any house that sells....it kills off the termites but they always return. An expensive endeavor if you ask me.
You might call a Pest Control Company and have them come out and look at that. Termites are a part of life I think, lol....
We would joke and say how only the termites were holding up the house ![]()
Good luck and don't worry.

Thanks @cbrite. I certainly hope you're right and it's not termites. There's something that might be shavings on the other side of the trim. I'm not sure. The pest control company is coming on Tuesday morning.

A year after we moved into our house, 46 years ago, I was cleaning the side of a door frame in my den. Midway up my finger went thru what I had thought was solid wood. Inside were little white things that moved, yikes. Now my DH is really not into bugs and things and he said it looked like wood worms - whatever that is. Anyway, it turned out to be the dreaded termites and the house was treated. What was weird was that they had eaten the wood but the paint was still intact, until my finger went thru it.

I think the polite term for that termite poo is "Frass"!

Having been on-site for many termite inspections prior to real estate closings, I have watched inspectors taking the handle end of a screwdriver and tapping it on exposed wood anywhere that wood is accessible. If the screwdriver goes through what looks like good solid wood, that is a sure sign of termite damage.
It could also be damage from some other type of wood-boring insect.
I believe termites "swarm" in the spring, so if you see a bunch of them flying around the exterior of a house and you see piles of white wings (perhaps on a porch floor, for example) that they shed at that time, it's definitely time for a thorough inspection of the interior.
So sorry you have to deal with a potential problem like this. I know how stressful it is just to think about it.

Termites travel from the ground to the wood of the house through tubes. They are very easily spotted by looking in the basement or crawl space. If you have a crawl space, they could be inside or outside on the foundation.

The termite inspector just left. I do have active termites. There was more of the baseboard trim damaged behind the chest that I didn't see. He said they were in several different spots under my house. I am really disappointed, but I had a feeling that was going to be the way it was.

@NickNack: I am so sorry to hear about your termite infestation. If I were you when the necessary steps are taken, get a termite bond with the company doing the repair. As I live in the South, we have had a termite bond on each home we have purchased through the years. It runs us @$160 a year for a yearly inspection/report, but will cover the cost for necessary repairs. I was going to transfer my bond to my pest control company but the expense was @$3500 for the pest company to take over. Good luck.

@Hoovermom I'm going to. They said it would be $145 to inspect it each year. The treatment is guaranteed for ten years.
