It's not really the symmetry that's a problem for me. I think the colors are very harsh, especially in the curtains.

ITA with you. If I may add, it's way too formal as well.

@wilma Not for me. Although I do like the size of the room.

Nothing appealing about this room at all. Makes my ugliest rooms list.

All I can think of is the husband in Julia Roberts movie, I think Sleeping with the Enemy. He made sure the cans were all spaced perfectly, facing the same way, towels were always perfect in the bathroom etc.
That room is uncomfortable to look at much less be in.

It is indeed symmetrical and awful.

At first glance I thought this was a bedoom and the colors were too bright for relaxing. Well, I still think they are too bright, they look like high school or college colors.

First thought that comes into my mind....Pittsburgh Steelers.

@Oznell wrote:@wilma, I recognized it as a room designed by Mary McDonald, L.A. designer, if anyone remembers the Bravo design show "Million Dollar Decorators" she used to have with Brits Martyn Lawrence Bullard and Kathryn Ireland.
She runs the gamut, a lot of her work I'm not fond of, but some of it is quite good, with lots of classical references, and fearless color.
That said, I don't like the colors she used here! Don't like her as much in this ultra formal, academic, mode here-- I like her in her more "playful" mode....
Thank you for the information on the designer. I never watched that show. I will Google her to read more.

@Oznell Jeffrey Alan Marks and his then cute young boyfriend, Ross, were also on that show, which was sort of fun, but didn't last long. I think it might have made it for two seasons but that was about it. It seems to me there might even have been another occasional contributor, but I don't remember exactly. Anyway, I found all of those designers did good work UNTIL they went over the top and nowhere is that more clear than with this McDonald designed room. She does great work when she isn't trying too hard. The same could be said for Bullard and Ireland, though I haven't seen much of Marks' work lately. Though none of them is an exact 'match', I suppose Ireland's work tends to be more down to earth more of the time, while McDonald and especially Bullard tend to be more often swayed by 'high design'.
