Re: Style Called Rustic Farmhouse

It looks very contemporary to me.  Not my idea of "rustic".

Re: Style Called Rustic Farmhouse

Probably about as rustic as most upper  class people want to get.

In my world, rustic farmhouse meant eating on a wood bench you dared not scoot across on for fear of getting a splinter in your behind!   We drew our water from the well, heated it on the wood stove to wash dishes and to bathe.  It took 4 buckets from the well to have enough water in the galvanized washtub for us kids to bathe.

When we moved from the basement into the upstairs rooms, our rustic kitchen had a cold water spigot, and our dishes were washed and rinsed in dishpans.  We emptied the dishpan water into a 5 gallon bucket and watered flowers, or the garden with it in the summer.  Water still had to be heated on the stove for dish washing and bathing.

Re: Style Called Rustic Farmhouse

@RedTop  My grandparents bought a farm and I remember when they first got it walking into the house and seeing a big heater in the dining room.  They did have a building outside to put a ringer washer. Grandma used to let me "pull" the clothes through. Grandma's brother was a carpenter so he put in new wood floors. All the cupboards in the kitchen were set in....nothing built in. It took some time but after a lot of work it turned into a nice house.

You are right though....what they call "farmhouse" today looks nothing like farmhouse back when....even after remodeling!  For me, a rustic farmhouse should have less white and almost look a little like a Craftsman home.

Re: Style Called Rustic Farmhouse

ZERO about either room is farmhouse or rustic. I concur that people slap on a "farmhouse" or "rustic" name to something and have NEVER set foot in a TRUE rustic farmhouse. Or are hoping it looks farmhouse or rustic to those with no clue or are trying to sell a designer or interior features.

I like these rooms but don’t consider them rustic in any way.

The mix of traditional furnishings and vintage-inspired elements and colors make it a gathering space that instantly inspires ease and comfort.

@jubilantI dunno about the label "rustic farmhouse". I think it's mislabeled. I do really like both rooms though. I would have to add splashes of red.

Thanks for posting.

@jubilant,   I enjoy the range of looks to which you've been exposing us, for all of us who so savor the sport of "looking"!   Doesn't have to be my personal style--  I often relish aspects of them or even get ideas from rooms that wouldn't be up my alley.  Keep up the good work.

Thank you, @Oznell.  It's fun to hunt for something different. So many different tastes and, yes, while I can find elements in almost everyone one of them I like, they are not all my style.  Actually, I love so many different styles that it's hard to say what is my style!   I appreciate all your wonderful informing posts and have learned a lot from them and even applied them to my own home.

Nothing much appeals to me in either space other than the hardwood floors and windows. Neither is my style.

As far as being rustic or farmhouse, I'm no expert. I see elements of those styles in each. Probably why I don't care for either room. I'm not a fan of farmhouse or rustic style.
