Both good ideas if you're desperate for space which, fortunately, I am not!

I have a wonderful closet under my stairs.  There certainly is alot of space under steps and DH attached a closet rod to the wall and across the area to the step.  Can hang alot of clothes there and I have two baskets of shoes on the floor under the clothes rod.  The rest of the space is used for Christmas decorations.  DH built a sliding door in the wall to access the space.

Only issue is DH has to take out the clothes to get the Christmas items, but it is only once a year and he doesn't mind.  Of course, you could do either/or - skip the clothes rod and just use the entire area for storage.

The first one is a terrific idea and design.  I have something similar for storage under my steps that lead to the basement; not quite as classy, but it is a storage area!  The second photo looks to be quite a steep set of stairs.

I think the first one is great but the second one is not for me....if one of those drawers were left open it would be a bad fall down those steps.

I really like the 1st one, but the 2nd one the stairs do look very steep.

I have a turned staricase and under my stairs is the door to go down into the basement ...another set of stairs that also turns.  Under the basement stairs we have holiday storage.

That's a very clever idea for space that is normally wasted.

I made that wasted space under the stairs, into a pantry in my kitchen---have all sorts of shelving in it on all sides and as it slopes towards the back, which is the front of the stairs, I use wire racks that fit right in the middle, that   I wheel in and out for more storage---did this 33 years ago when we built the house--not sure how  I came up with that idea  but ended up being very handy.

The first example seems a good bit more useful and easily accessed than the second, but sure, why not use this space for storage. More times that not, there some oddly shaped closet under stairs. Perhaps the shelves help to better maximize space.

I love that someone made these pull out drawers instead of a closet. I think it makes better use of the space because the drawers can go deep instead of being a cavern or deep hole where things are hard to get to.

The first one is a good idea.  As others have already said, the second one is an accident waiting to happen.  (And ugly to boot.)
