Re: Stackable washer and dryer

When I first relocated here a couple of years ago I lived in a new condo complex that offered GE stackables.

The capacity was decent, I could wash a set of king sheets but it wasn't the extra large capacity I have now. No way would it take a comforter/coverlet, etc. Also, the lid on the washer doesn't open as wide as a conventional top load machine. It can make bulky items tricky to load and it can be just as tricky taking out heavy items that are wet. I typically do 3-4 loads per week.

Would I buy one? Only if space was limited as it was in this condo. Otherwise I like the convenience of the large capacity top load Maytag that I have now.

Re: Stackable washer and dryer

My son has an older (washer has an agitator) stackable in his rental apartment. Capacity is small and the agitator has ruined a couple of articles of clothing. What you end up getting will depend on the space you have to put your stackables in. I would look at front-loaders OR possibly you could consider the newer all-in-one washer-dryers. I have had my front-loader washer and dryer for about 5 years now. I chose to put them side by side and I purchased the bases (at that time they were $100 each I see the bases are a lot more now!) as they are in my garage and without the bases they were too low for me (I have chronic back pain). Re: Stackable washer and dryer

I have a full-size stackable, several years old, and love it. No problems. Love how it saves space.

Re: Stackable washer and dryer

Thank you everyone. I appreciate your replies.

We moved here about five years ago after living in our other home for around a hundred years or so. The stackable washer and dryer were left here on the main floor which is very convenient. My larger ones were put on the lower level . The washer is now kaput. the coast of repair is equal to the cost of new!!!! It seems the design of most units has changed drastically, which is usually the case if something of mine decides to quit. Couldn't just get something equal to what I had! Oh no! That would be too easy.

The washer that is now deceased was perfect for every day. I put large items in the larger machine. I haven't called my favorite appliance store yet as I wanted to have an idea of what is available. Unless you get a person who loves his or her job, trying to find out if the store carries an item which will suit your needs can be very frustrating. So I am looking on the internet, hoping to find a washer I can use as an example in my quest. I once phoned a well known lumber store regarding an item. No one had an answer and kept sending me to another "more Knowledgeable" person. Finally the last one I spoke with referred me to an "authority". Turned out to be the first person I had talked to. This seems to happen more and more.

This is a small space so can't stack larger ones or I would be happy to do that. If I learn something "valuable" I will let you know.

I just read your reply again. Too bad he has an agitator. If he had a newer model I think he would like it.

I'm glad you mentioned the front loader issue. That is another big deal.. Most of the ones I've found are top loading! This means you have to buy washer and dryer. I would buy just the washer if I could. I really don't want a top loader of the newly designed "unitized" model even if I were to buy both.

Same old story....if it ain't broke , why fix it!!!!!!!

Re: Stackable washer and dryer

I have a washer and dryer down in the basement (regular size) but my legs really started to give me problems. I gave up a closet on my main floor and had a stackable washer and dryer put in it. I bought a GE and I absolutely love, love it. It does not vibrate it is wonderful. I hardly hear it operating and I wash every thing in it. I will honestly say when it quits I am calling my local appliance store and telling them to load another GE on a truck and send it here. I even know which model of the GE that I would purchase. I have been using this one for at least 8 years and would not give it up.

Re: Stackable washer and dryer

I have Whirlpool stackables. I do not have them stacked because it would block a large window that I really like in my laundry room. It is a front loader and I got them from Costco. I have been very happy with them.

Re: Stackable washer and dryer

Our Whirlpool unit is a workhorse! As far as we can tell, it's nearly 20 years old and going strong. We had a part replaced last year, but that's the only maintenance it has needed. It fits crazy-large loads of laundry for a stackable. I would most definitely recommend it.
