When do you start? Do others still do this like I do? Do you have any tips or tricks? I usually start on Ash Wednesday (March 2nd this year) because I need to set a date for myself and I'm a slow mover. I love the feeling after conquering this early Spring tradition. I remember my Mom doing the Spring cleaning...us kids better stay out of her way! But, oh boy, our home was sparkling clean and smelled so fresh when she was done. Even if we had a late snowfall, she'd open the windows to refresh the air.

Re: Spring Cleaning

[ Edited ]

I when I grew up, our home was always cleaned every spring.  It was done by my mother and me and my two sisters,

When I was first married, I carried on the tradition, but not anymore anymore.  i don't change my drapes out for the season and my windows tilt in, so I wash them....or my husband does many times a year.  I dust the blinds and wash the drapes when I  think they need it.

It never made sense to me to clean the house and open the windows.  Where I grew up and where I live now is dusty and dirty outside.  All that dirt comes right in.

I do my deep cleaning in the fall after I close the house up before winter.

Right now, my second floor is a nightmare.  I am getting new hardwood floors.  Every piece of furniture for 4 bedrooms are crammed in one room.  My bedroom only has my bed in it.

All the bedrooms rooms have been freshly painted.  The bathrooms all have new paint as well, and new vinyl floors are in those room as of yesterday.  I am just waiting on a granite vanity top and new facets for one bathroom.

My hardwood floors will not  be installed until March 30-31, so I will have to live with this clutter for a while. Once my floors are done, I am going to put everything back, wash the windows and go through the closets... and hang new window coverings,  I suppose that will be my spring cleaning.

My kitchen cabinets need cleaned in the worse way...they will have to wait until  the floors are in.  I plan to clean out the basement this summer.

Cleaning is ongoing.  I try to do it throughout the year in stages....so no specific spring cleaning for me.   I am too old and have lost interest in that.

It's not a big ritual for me.   I do what I can when I can.  I just did a deep cleaning on the master bathroom.

It's was a thing when I was a kid but not so much now.  With all of the vacuums and other cleaning machines and better cleaning products, our home cleaners now.  We thoroughly clean all the time, not just a few times a year.  I have cleaning service come in to do carpets, walla and windows twice a year.  My niece and nephew live with us, they do the weekly cleaning.  They are organized and fast.

We don't do official spring cleaning, but we did recently complete our winter purge. As we purge we are also cleaning, straightening, and rearranging.

My mother was a spring and fall cleaner; washed walls and baseboards in every room, rearranged furniture, cleaned windows, washed curtains, stripped and waxed our tile floors until they shined like glass.

When I first married, I thought I needed to do the same, but once I started working, I didn't have time, or see it as important.   I keep my house clean and presentable, but I'm not wearing myself out doing anything close to what my mother did.

I use to be more like that and also about kill myself off and I was much younger then too.  I do things differently now.

Starting in January I start oganizing cupboards, closets, drawers and shelves and I hit it hard.  I start there after Christmas and start with putting away Christmas stuff.  I move stuff out and organize things better.  I did a good job this year.  Donated lots of things.

What I do is start to add extra chores to my general housekeeping each week.  As the weather warms up so does my energy.

This last weekend I hit it hard and accomplished a lot.  I'm just going to keep at it because once it warms up I plan on being on the outside more.

I'm  trying to spread it out and keep things up better all year long.  Not easy when I'm working fulltime and gets dark out early.

But windows, screens,  carpet cleaning  and garage always get done as the weather gets better.

As a child growing up in a rural area with wood heat, it was a necessity. Walls and ceilings had to be washed, and the curtains were washed and hung out to dry. I enjoy spring cleaning, but thankfully, wall washing isn't needed. I pick one room a week, move out most of the furniture, and deep clean. My kitchen takes the longest, so I plan on an eight hour day to finish it. My decluttering is done in January, so I don't need to go through drawers and closets during the springtime sessions. I'll do the majority of my cleaning in March and April. In November, I thoroughly clean again before putting up the Christmas decorations.

I clean Monday - I no longer do "Spring' cleaning.

Since I had new windows put in they are great - tilt style and when I see  they need it - easy job!

Pot shelves, baseboards, etc. - I just hired a cleaning service to do a "deep" cleaning of my house - its well worth the $$ -- always smells so nice and fresh.  I just can't climb ladders anymore.

Drapes are only in one room, I have wood blinds - now they are a mess - I clean them once a month with just a damp cloth sprayed with Mr. Clean or Murphy's soap.  They are white and show the dust ...ugh...

Other than this, normal cleaning, changing of sheets and my house is in order (which is easy just the 2 of us).

Laundry - hate it because its in garage and its HOT in there in the summer so I wash clothes at night and in cooler times I'll do a load about every 3-4 days.

Cleaning is not a priority anymore as to much I can't do.
