Re: Speaking of decluttering…

Thanks for the support and suggestions!

@jlkz To answer your question, the majority of stuff is in limbo. That’s what’s so frustrating. I absolutely need to part with lots of it. I always think I’ll have a need for something down the road.

more important to get the stuff outta the house

Re: Speaking of decluttering…

I have done a lot of decluttering this year and have also kept at it.  September is church rummage sale again and have stuff ready to go but going to do another sweep of the downstairs.

What I have done in the past is put items in bins and move to the garage. Mostly because of my husband and not wanting to let go. Some me too and just wasn't ready to let go but it was time.  So during the last rummage sale in the spring my daughter and I went through all the bins and made decisions.  Only one bin left but Christmas items so those will go to this sale coming up.  They only wanted seasonal items and clothes.

I went through my closets and donated clothes to the places that the church helps.  I wanted those items to go to Womens Center.

I always have a box in the back of my car to put items in for donations and also one in my washroom ready for donation items as well.    When full I drop off.

I too would move things from one spot to another spot until I decided enough of all that and in the bins they went and out to the garage and now are all gone.  No more storage of bins and now it is just either going to the church sales or places the church supports.   I feel better about doing that.

I’m noticing a pattern with myself and it’s not a good one. I take to decluttering certain areas of my house, but I’m realizing that a lot of stuff ends up just getting shifted to another area. It’s as though I’m tricking myself into thinking I’m organizing (and I may be organizing that space), but I am ultimately cluttering another space. There are some items I just don’t know what to do with so I move them to different spots, but never seem to figure out a practical and permanent location. Gonna have to work on that.

@Natureluvr I think you have to get rid of to declutter.  Otherwise it's shuffling.  If there is something you don't know what to do with, does it really mean you don't use it or don't like it or don't want it?  I hereby give you permission to get rid of it however you can.

If you need to throw it away to get more space and be happy and relaxed--DO it!  It is yours, it is yours to not have.  Do not feel guilt.  Do not feel like you must be a museum.  Live your life as you want to live it!  If you give it away, it was a blessing to you that you are passing on.

  • 🙉 Has anyone seen the " Gemini Thrifts" Videos on YouTube? A woman who professionally buys merchandise to resell purchased a "QVC Haul" from a man whose wife passed away, and he discovered her massive stash of QVC merchandise, many boxes unopened and several years old. The asking price was $1,000, she talked him down to $800. She has videos (4 or 5 in total) of opening the boxes. First video, just some of the items ...... Kitchen Aid stand mixer and accessories, two vacuum cleaners, a carpet cleaner, clothing, linens and bedding, and a ton of VPH merchandise, just to name some of the items. She doubled or even tripled that $800 investment, and still had a lot of packages to sort through.

If you are buying, stashing things away, opened or unopened, and running out of space you need to watch these videos.

Very sobering for anyone who over-buys and needs to "declutter." If this doesn't inspire you, nothing will.

@Natureluvr

And I usually do!

Somewhere down the road, a use for it pops up and I'll say to myself, Darn! Why did I get rid of that?

And as far as thinking I'll just get another one, that's hard for me to do, when I know that I had one and tossed it!

Guess I'm no good at all with the original question.....

@ManyMeows - I watch her videos.  And I saw the videos with the QVC haul.  As you said, it is very sobering.

As for the stash that the you tuber has in her warehouse, all in the name of reselling, it gives me anxiety. I feel like it's hoarding. Some of the stuff she buys at yard sales and estate sales is ridiculous.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

You and DH would make twins !  I move stuff out easily to its next home; he keeps organizing it and the Mass grows and multiplies !  He has more bins than I can count !

He is 81 but still might need something stored away, NOT !

Now my project is to get rid of all this unneeded stuff so I am not left with the task alone.  A major outside project just got completed so he knows what's next.

Re: Speaking of decluttering…

I'm a big fan of decluttering. Before my mother passed, she had cleaned out her entire apartment of so many things. She had us all over individually to go through things and to take what meant something to us. She had no clue that it was "her time", it was just something she decided to do. It was sad to go through her things and wish there were more things to go through. I have a friend I went to school with who saves everything. They have moved quite often through all the years and I never can understand where in the world he's stashing all the stuff. He has things such as our high school memorabilia, along with things from companies that used to be in business in our little hometown. It's kind of nice to see all the stuff but I can't help but wonder how many times his wife rolls her eyes!

Re: Speaking of decluttering…

We are so in need of decluttering that at times I almost want to move and leave everything here. . . just cannot make one more decision. But I am tackling it a bit at a time, until work pulls me away.
