With the advent of the flameless candle, then the flame look flameless candles, many of us have all but abandoned the regular candle.
Some of us still use the votive or jar candles for fragrance in our homes, and we may have some pretty real pillars for looks, but the lowly taper or dinner candle had all but disappeared from my home.
I noticed that I still have about a dozen Baldwin brass candlesticks, that I have always loved, but that had been mostly put away in drawers and 'forgotten'. The couple of ones (and wall sconces) that still were displayed in my home had candles in them that must have come from the dime store decades ago. They were still in fine shape, but rather boring, and faded over time.
I had noticed in finer gift shops, for quite some time, a candle by Root, in the style Timberline. I really wanted to pick some up, and try them for decor only (not to burn), but everywhere I went, they didn't have enough of the color and style/sizes I wanted.
After discovering that they are made near here in Ohio, I took a field trip to their factory and flagship store yesterday, and boy what a selection of beautiful pillars and tapers.
Such an array of colors, and this Timberline style is rather mottled (similar to the Mirage candles we've seen here at Q), and add such dimension to the lowly taper dinner candle. They come in various thicknesses or fatness (how's that for some technical descriptions!!), and I have transformed my already beautiful brass candlesticks into a real designer looking addition to my decor.
They have other styles that are more elegant, as well as the simple smooth taper. What is great is that they have so many sizes, thicknesses, and pillars in lots of sizes, all to match and coordinate with the dinner/tapers. You can build a really designer look with all the sizes and styles.
I mixed heights and thickness of candles in the same color in groups of three and am really pleased with the 'new' look I've created.
Just thought for some of you that still have some old but loved candlesticks that are looking tired or boring (or have been put away too long) there is a newer (to me, anyway) look to be built with these great candles, made right here in the USA.
They have a website, and we were told that starting on March ll, they are having a 25% off sale. Of course, after I drop $100 on candles. I may go back for some pillars during the sale.
They aren't exactly cheap, but they have caught my attention for a while now, and thought I'd give them a whirl. Glad I did.

@Mominohio, your mention of Baldwin Brass candlesticks made me smile.
My mom gave me one for four straight Christmas's, each in a different style. She did the same with my cousins. That was her standard gift for several years. I know that brass isn't "in" right now, but I've never put mine away. I love them. I asked our local consignment shop about them and they won't take them. They said no one buys them.
Recently, we've been cleaning out my parents home so it can be sold and I brought home the 3 Baldwin candlesticks that my mom had for herself. I'm thinking about giving those to three family members for Christmas. They loved my mom, she's gone now, and I think they would like having them.

I, too, have heard that brass is 'not in' these days, but for me, classic never goes out of style.
In jewelry and in home decor, 'they' are always saying you can mix your metals, and I do.
To me there is just something timeless about quality American made Baldwin brass. I have table lamps as well, and can't imagine parting with them. Too bad, but another fine American company gone (they still do some work but not any lamps/candlesticks).
I look on ebay at Baldwin all the time, and it is amazing how low some of it sells.
I think that gifting your mom's pieces would be wonderful. In my collection, I have the original small candlesticks I bought when I started housekeeping in the very early 80's, along with a bigger set that belonged to my great aunt. I think of her whenever I see them, and miss her so much. I'm sure family members would be so happy to get those.
Others I have picked up at thrift stores, and some my husband has found at auctions. Sometimes he buys a whole box full of brass for $5, and there are one or two pristine Baldwin pieces in there. I'm more than happy to take advantage of the 'down' market on these lovelies!

Nice website. I'm enjoying looking around on it, they have nice stuff. I'm still browsing around in the gourmet section and I also noticed they sell
poo-pourri. That stuff is everywhere! I'm jealous of your field trip...it sounds like fun!

Congratulations on discovering A I Root in Medina!
I stopped at their outlet store on my way to Holmes county last summer. OMG, have they ever changed!
They used to have a tiny retail space where you could buy factory seconds and that was about it. Used to go there when I was first out on my own and got their scented candles for cheap. Didn't see much in the way of seconds when I was there.
The retail space is really beautiful and great quality candles. The short pillars look wonderful in my 4"votives from the Libbey glass outlet in Toledo.
