Yes, your kitchen drawers will be beautifully organized and neat if you only have 2 knives, a wine opener, a spatula and a tea towel.  How pointless.

If you have three shirts, 2 pair of pants, 2 pairs of shoes and a dress, yes YOUR closet can look like this as well.  You might have to forgo underwear totally.  No room for that.

Why don't they admit they are not talking about "organizing"--but really about not having things.

I have been a minimalist since back when I first got married @Sooner . We lived in an apartment in New York City and started a family in a relatively small apartment in N.J. All of it was out of necessity but to this day I live in a streamlined environment with few excess possessions.

Anyone can take minimilasim to an extreme, though. I have seen YouTube channels where some minimalists sleep on the floor. But having fewer possessions to take care of in life, leaves a lot of time for favorite hobbies and activities.

Great topic @Sooner .💐🌺🌻

@Trinity11 I admire your fortitude.  But to me, hobbies are about the biggest generator of clutter there is.  That and decorating for the seasons unless you toss it out at the end of the season.

Horseback riding, reading, swimming, reading to kids at the library, long walks at the beach? None of those things require clutter @Sooner .😊

Oh come on @Sooner you know why, because this nonsense is a new industry and people are making money hoodwinking the gullible members of the public selling books, appearing on TV and spouting lunacy, such as advising us to fondle our belongings only keeping those that 'bring us joy'.

Okay, @stevieb - I'll keep my cats and toss everything else!  Woman Wink

Marie Kondo has had a change of heart since having her third child.  No longer finding it necessary to live in an immaculate, tidy house.

Hmmm.  Wonder why that is?

It's all dumb.  It's not meant for real people with real lives.  You are right.  It only works for people who don't own anything or arrange a gorgeously organized closet or pantry and then walk away and never touch it again.

Does anyone remember Don Aslett? He wrote books about organization and clutter free living back in the 80's. He was around long before the gurus of organization that have popped up in the past few years.

Oh yes @Trinity11. His "Clutter's Last Stand" still has a place on our bookshelf. I've been impressed with some of the supplies he sold on QVC at one time. He impressed upon me that a really good doormat was a must!

That made me laugh when I read it.  She made all the money she could make out if it and ended it.

Some of the organization advice will only work if you actually have the space to do it. I have small closets, small cabinets, etc. No way can I put everything of its type in a separate drawer or shelf. Those who live in apartments or condos are at a disadvantage when they read a lot of these ideas. Cleaning? That seems to depending upon one's comor level.

@Trinity11 Horseback riding doesn't require clutter?  We had a barn full of it!  Woman Embarassed  I just wouldn't think of reading to people or walking as hobbies.  More like activities. . . but that's just me.

@Harpa No, nothing said on QVC.  Just observations from e-mail I get.

Not sure who's advice this was but it was said that if you get rid of something and then find that you really do need it, then just go buy a new one. I'm not sure what to think about that advice.
