Patching a bit of wall and then matching the texture is a skilled job.  Ask me how I know 😢

Also you will never, ever match older paint,  At all.

Until you are ready for a full wall job, the suggestions for a bigger wall plate are good ones.

@AngelPuppy1 thank you for asking this question!  I had no idea a wall plate existed! @Biftu thank you for the information of the paint scrapings!  You both are lifesavers!  My husband just knocked a hole in the wall with a barbell, and we wondered how we would match the paint.  The whole room will likely have to be repainted, but at least the paint would match the rest of the house. It's worth a shot anyway.  Thank you, again!

@AngelPuppy1.  When I'm in doubt about how to fix something, I take my problem to one of the local, not big box, hardware stores like Ace or Tru-Value.  They know how to fix everthing and will collect what you need. 

I have a bucket of sheet rock mud for repairs with a putty knife.  If it's a very small hole you can use ordinary toothpaste and let it harden.  Matching paint, even white, is very difficult.  You probably won't get an exact match.

Have you ever had one of the children knock a hole in the wall where they pulled the door back too hard and the door knob went through the wall?  It's an easy fix by a handyman and the same might apply here.  I would MAKE the guy who sold me the thermostat either fix it or recommend a fix-it man who he would pay or give you a great price.

To patch drywall, you want a tub of spackle. DAP makes pretty good spackle. I like their vinyl spackle as it has a nice give to it.

Newer spackles may go on pink and dry white to let you know it's dry. Get a 1"- 1 1/2"  putty knife to apply. Putty knives have a flexible blade. I like metal blades but there are plastic ones as well. 

A little at a time, let it dry and then repeat. For big jobs like knocking a hole in drywall, there is drywall screen. Very light, thin and flexible. Easily cuts with scissors to the size you need.

None of these items are pricey. YT or Home Depot for tutorials. 😉

That's great that they did this.  This co. we had were kind of rough and they never said anything about this- they just put it up and were out the door.

I wouldn't call them back.  I was less than satisfied with the work they did and they were very messy.  I will leave it at that!
