I remodeled my kitchen last spring and had  HD laminate installed.  I LOVE it!  It's not cold and when I accidently touch a glass to it, it doesn't shatter the glass.   I went with what I could afford and what I've had for years and years and it's durable.  I don't care what anybody says.

Sure you cannot put a hot pan on it, but I use trivets..or cut on it, I use cutting boards...no concern.

As for selling the home.....the previous owners sold this home to us and it had laminate countertops then.....it's the bones of the home people should look at , location.... and the mechanical./plumbing/furnace, etc....not something that is cosmetic and can be changed if they want it.....just to be "in style" or on "trend"...JMO on the subject...

I got laminate when we had our house built in 1981.  In 2015 I got a new kitchen.  I got laminate again.  My old laminate countertop looked like new when I replaced it.   No complaints here.

LOL  My DH decided he wanted quartz or granite counter tops. Our kitchen is 20ft x 12 ft.& includes a breakfast bar that is elevated so very large amount of counters. I tried to tell him it would be very expensive but he went off to a kitchen remodeling store and discussed replacing the counters. When they told him $12,000 installed I think he just about stopped breathing. We kept our formica which I like and think is very attractive.

After working for 42 years in hospitals where they have had SS appliances and black granite countertops for as long as I can remember - that look just says "commercial property" to me! Not a look I'd want in my home. Also I have seem many a cracked granite counter top in hospital kitchens - so don't think it is always permanent.

BTW - HGTV ias paid for by the companies that sell things like floors, counter tops and other home decorating products. THey , of course, aim to sell you the newest trends always. It is not wise to drink the HGTV kool aid.

@151949. I thought you mentioned a few months back you were looking at new homes as you wanted to move. Have you decided to stay?

My bathroom and the half bath are going to be Formica at the new house. The neighbor where we are moving put in white and gray laminate in the kitchen. My mom says it’s really pretty. My sisters house is 8 yo. They put Formica in the kitchen when they built it. But are telling abut putting granite in soon. I do think if you can afford it go granite or quartz st least in the kitchen. My parents master bath will be marble.

We are still looking but haven't found anything better than where we are that we can afford easily. I refuse to move and be house poor. We would like to get into a single family house instead of a villa, but we like this location a lot and all they seem to be building near us are villas. So far we don't really want to get into an older house - and will not even consider one built before the 2002 Miami - dade hurricane standards were initiated, so we are limited in our choices. I think we will probably be staying here.

Are you paying for your sister's new countertops?  If so, you absolutely have a say. If not, than it falls under the category of nonya business! Certainly you can make suggestions if she's asked, but you cannot force someone or berate them for making a decison they are paying for with their own money.

Honestly, 90% of what I see out there bores me or is just not my taste. Granite countertops TOP of the list!! That's my preference, and I really could care less what anyone else thinks. If someone wants to buy me a new kitchen remodel, certainly I'll acquiesce to their suggestions, but I don't foresee that happening any time soon! lol

I'm certainly not going to make decisons based on a TV show whose job is to sell you products to make them or their sponsers money!  And I'm not one to decorate 'on trend' which to me is silly, and will be 'out of trend' within 3-5 years.  I don't have the resources to redo my home top to bottom every 3-5 years because advertisers tell me to. Nor would I.  That's laughable!

@sometimesQVCaddict

ITA with you. My mother's generation kept everything in their home until it was no longer usable. Furniture, appliances, flooring  etc were never replaced just to get the newest or fanciest thing out on the market.They were used until they no longer functioned. In our previous home we lived there 28 years. In that time we remodeled the bath & kitchen once, bought new carpet once. We did paint or wallpaper occasionally. Bought new upholstered furniture for the living room twice. This idea that it is important to keep a house up to date with the newest trends all the time is just crazy to me.Just don't buy trendy stuff to start with and you won't have to worry about it becoming passe'.
