Short of storage space? Share a storage hack if you have one.

It isn't rocket science, but I have been, over the last couple of years,  putting some extra blankets on the extra and guest beds in my home that rarely get used (almost never at this point in time). When I make up the bed, I can put two or three blankets on the bed, under the quilt and no one knows the difference by looking at the room.

It frees up some of my linen closet space, allows me to keep a couple more blankets than I really have room to store, and keeps them out of sight and clean.

Do you have any storage hacks that we could all benefit from?

We store the leaves for our dining table under our bed. We have three bathrooms and the one in the hall is just a guest bath. We never have overnight guests, so I use the tub in the hall bath to store decorative pillows and comforters. I don't decorate the space above our kitchen cabinets or on top of our bookshelves, so I bought wicker baskets with lids to store things in on top of the cabinets and shelves. Our smallest extra bedroom is used as a closet. Somethings just can't be stored in our outside storage building.

We have a rather large enclosed area, that contains our water heater and furnace. It also contains the chimney and old water meter. I only opened it to clean once in awile. Then I got to thinking, there is alot of room here. So the far end away from the furnace and water heater, is a great space for additional storage.

Our neighbor did the same thing. She even had her husband put shelves up.

Decorative storage boxes have been my go to for extra storage for years.

Michael's craft store carries an assortment of seasonal designs, shapes and sizes to suit items that need to be handy but disguised.  Over the years, I've used floral suitcase style boxes matched with large floral boxes, stacking them, here and there, in bedrooms to be a catch all for extra linens to fashion accessories. In the living room, they're handy for throws and even puppy toys.  One in the bathroom holds cosmetics.  They can serve as a quick end table as well.  I place a large crochet doily over the top but not necessary.

My huge hutch has glass doors, top and bottom, and there are a couple of matching boxes in there too.  It's an attractive way to add color to any decor and hold your stuff at the same time!

Re: Short of storage space? Share a storage hack if you have one.

There's a large ziplock plastic bag that I can put under the bed.  Some beds have drawers there, but I use these for ours. Oh a few weeks ago, got rid of some of hub's shirts he never wore.  He let me bag those up to pass on.  Those empty drawers now hold blankets.  It got to be quite a lot for me to keep throwing folded blankets on the top of the closet shelves. l The drawers are much better for me.  I love that I have that space now for sheets and blankets.  My older home has smaller closets too.

I purchased extra high bed frames (called storage bed frames) and can now stack 3 deep sweater boxes (the long plastic ones you buy at Walmart) in groups of 4 (so 12 boxes). I did that with all the beds so I now have 60 boxes worth of storage at my disposal.

Under the bed storage is a fantastic thing as as long as you can get to it and having the beds a few inches higher made a HUGE difference.

My walk-in is bulging and I'm on the way to doing the same in the guest bedroom closet. DH still has his in his den/extra bed room. I think I'll leave him alone.

I keep my suitcases, carry ons & duffle bags under my bed.

I also have a few framed art/paintings under my bed.  Haven't decided yet after moving 5 yrs ago where I am going to hang them.  hidemf3.gif

You have some great ideas and practices @Nicnacsmommy!

I store the leaves to my dining table under a bed as well. Many people don't know that they should be stored flat, because if stored on end, can warp and then not fit the table.

I used to use our guest bath tub to store the big warehouse packs of TP and paper towels. I got tired of just knowing they were there, even though no one ever used that tub, and decided to buy less, and store what extra I did have in the basement.

Your top of the cabinet storage is both attractive and smart!

@Lyttlewyng

I agree about the endless uses of decorative boxes. I have them for seasonal things too, and a few that are out all year. In particular I have some in the family room filled with magazines that I like to re read over and over again.
