They all light up and the light shines through the "mercury glass." The older ones (the ones that take AA batteries) shine with a steady light; the newer ones (C batteries) twinkle. They all have timers which I use. They come on at dusk, stay on for 6 hours, go off and come back on the next evening at dusk. I think they provide a lovely soft glow. I love the spheres--both the older version and the new ones.

Sounds like you guys all have creative ways to use them. I have a lot of the flameless candles from here, the southern station and Walmart. The two sets I have from QVC are the best in every way. I might get a set of these spheres for our covered front porch this summer.

I have 2 sets.

They really go through batteries like crazy.

Mary, I guess we might have different ideas about how long batteries should last but I think my batteries last a long time. I use the timer feature and it seems like batteries last at least a month, maybe longer. For the pleasure the spheres and other battery-lit items bring to me and the fact that I can use them at places where I don't have an outlet, I think that's very reasonable.

Nana5 - I think mine last about a month too. I guess I'm spoiled by battery life on flameless candles. I bought some dollar store batteries to try next time.

I thought maybe it was the dollar store batteries that weren't lasting very long. I always use good quality batteries. I agree that my candles last longer than my spheres. Perhaps the number of lights in the spheres and the fact that they twinkle wear the battery down quicker.

Well I finally joined the ""sphere"" club! my 1st order....gold...decided to play it safe on color...and these are so pretty!! It's not even dark here yet and they look amazing. I have no idea how I will use them and where...just kinda put them all around right now. I did get mine in the ""as is"" section and they are fine. The largest sphere has a slight ripple in the glass toward the bottom...you can't see it well at all. Guess that is what made it a ""as is"" item...the others look perfect. I admit I was very concerned doing that...tried with other things and it was a waste of money...item was broken.

I got all my sets of spheres either at the Q outlet, at the Q "as is" section or on Ebay. Thankfully they all look fine and work correctly. And I assume they were probably all returns.
