Sealing tile

A year and a half ago we got new tile over a large portion of our house plus bathroom areas. It's time to seal it. I was told at Home Depot to find out the kind of tile we have and if we need to seal the whole tile or just the grout. I have a call into my contractor to find out. While I wait, how do you go about sealing it? Especially if you have a large area like I do. I know you have to clean it well first. What kind of applicator do you use? What is the process? Is it difficult? Thank you.
